Join Dr Christine Bhat for a Guest Lecture at Monash University

In collaboration with Monash University, we invite you to a guest lecture with Dr. Christine Bhat, the 73rd President of the American Counseling Association.

This free event, open to all ACA counsellors and students, will take place at the Monash Clayton Campus and also accessible online via Zoom.

Dr. Bhat, a globally respected figure in the counselling profession, is not only a distinguished professor at Ohio University but also holds a deep personal connection to Melbourne, where she previously worked as a psychologist and counsellor. She is an alumna of Monash University, having earned her master’s degree in Organisational Psychology. With her extensive international experience, including leadership roles in the American Counseling Association and her dedication to mentoring the next generation of professionals, Dr. Bhat brings a wealth of knowledge to share with student counsellors.

Her presentation will focus on Psychological Capital (PsyCap), a powerful framework developed by Luthans (2002) that centers on four key psychological assets, known as HERO: Hope, Efficacy, Resilience, and Optimism. Presentation Abstract

Psychological Capital [PsyCap] (Luthans 2002) is comprised of the psychological assets of

  • Hope (persevering toward goals and, when necessary, redirecting paths to goals in order to succeed);
  • Efficacy (having confidence (self-efficacy) to take on and put in the necessary effort to succeed at challenging tasks;
  • Resilience (when beset by problems and adversity, sustaining and bouncing back and even beyond to attain success; and
  • Optimism (making a positive attribution about succeeding now and in the future); (Luthans et al., 2007, p. 3).

Known by the acronym HERO, PsyCap has been validated internationally and is a valuable tool for counselors and their clients. PsyCap is amenable to interventions focused on increasing it, or it can decrease when we become discouraged by setbacks.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn about positive psychological resources through the framework of Psychological Capital (PsyCap) and its components of Hope, Efficacy, Resilience, and Optimism (HERO).
  • Consider how they may measure, develop, and utilize HERO assets in themselves and their clients.
